“These are the small flowers of Polygonatum seedlings, beautiful like little bells in the wind.” On April 29, in Fengtian Village, Yongning Town, Tonggu County, Mo Yingfu, head of Tonggu DaDao Polygonatum Agriculture and Forestry Technology Co., Ltd., squatted in the greenhouse, looking at lush multiflower Polygonatum seedlings with joy.
“We are cultivating the local Tonggu multiflower Polygonatum, which is thick, large, and rich in fructooligosaccharides.” Mo Yingfu explained, “After domesticating wild Polygonatum, we collect high-quality seeds for greenhouse propagation, increasing germination from under 30% to 80% and shortening the growth period by two years.”

Tonggu County is a national ecological county with a forest coverage rate of 88.04%. The county leverages its ecological advantages, implementing the “ecological health preservation+” strategy to extend the health preservation industry chain, integrating with tourism, culture, sports, agriculture, and medicine.
At Dawei Mountain Forest Farm, reporters saw villagers sorting large, thick Polygonatum piles. Chen Fen, director of Jiangxi Seattle Agricultural Technology, said that after nine steaming and drying processes, high-quality Polygonatum is very popular in the market.
At Jinshangkang's flagship store, Polygonatum products include cakes, crisps, slices, candied Polygonatum, noodles, and wine. “Tonggu's multiflower Polygonatum products are diverse and high-quality, meeting various health needs.” Chen Fen said, “We're planting over 4,200 mu of Polygonatum, building an ecological health preservation base integrating planting, processing, sales, and tourism.”
Tonggu develops the under-forest economy, extending ecological planting to health tourism, cultivating over 10 natural specialties like Polygonatum, bamboo fungus, and monk fruit, with Polygonatum planting exceeding 50,000 mu and an annual output value of nearly RMB 200 million.
“Heat-sensitive moxibustion, acupuncture, tuina, massage… with eight technicians, we're still overwhelmed, with appointments booked two months in advance.” Liu Lin, head of Tonggu's Heat-Sensitive Moxibustion Center, explained. In the evening, three patients were receiving treatment in the therapy room. Liu Lin said, “Last year, the center received 6,000 patient visits, and this year the number has increased significantly.”
To meet tourists' needs, Tonggu will set up moxibustion experience points at Tangli Resort and Guqiao Village.
“The moxa sticks for heat-sensitive moxibustion are produced in Guqiao Village, Daduan Town.” Liu Lin noted that Guqiao Village has beautiful scenery and fresh air. At Guqiao Village's mugwort base, reporters saw lush, meter-tall mugwort growing vigorously.
“Guqiao Village began planting mugwort in 2023, with over 200 mu planted, guided by Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine experts.” Nie Lezhang, Guqiao Village's Party Branch Secretary, said the village built a mugwort processing workshop with moxa extraction and production lines, achieving full-chain production.
“Mugwort is valuable. We plan to develop mugwort pillows and cooperate with Tangli Resort for a one-stop experience of hot springs, moxibustion, and mugwort pillows.” Nie Lezhang said.
By the Dingjiang River, Tai Chi enthusiasts perform fluidly amid colorful scenery. Tonggu's “ecological health preservation + sports” industry thrives, with over 1,300 Tai Chi enthusiasts practicing Baduanjin. “We've promoted Tai Chi in schools, offices, enterprises, and villages, making it a new symbol of ‘Longevity Tonggu, Health Preservation Destination’.” Tian Yulin, President of Tonggu's Yang-Style Tai Chi Association, said.
With beautiful mountains, waters, and ecology, Tonggu is ideal for living, working, and health preservation. Tonggu has hosted Jiangxi's Mass Ice and Snow Sports Launch for seven years and events like the Poyang Lake Cycling Race and 2023 Tonggu Half Marathon. The blend of sports and tourism enriches Tonggu's cultural tourism and health preservation industry.
Tonggu leverages green ecology to boost the health preservation industry, creating a destination with mountains, waters, poetry, and nostalgia, advancing the “ecological health preservation+” strategy.
