On October 16, 2024, the 55th National Medicinal Materials and Medicines Trade Fair opened in Zhangshu City, Jiangxi Province. At the opening ceremony, the International Organization for Standardization officially released the international standard Traditional Chinese Medicine—Gardenia (ISO 13619:2024), marking the first international standard in the field of Chinese medicinal materials that Jiangxi Province has participated in. Relevant personnel from the Standardization Division of the Jiangxi Provincial Market Supervision Administration and the Jiangxi Institute of Quality and Standardization were invited to attend the event.
Shen Yuandong, Chair of the ISO/TC 249, stated at the press conference that the ISO international standard Traditional Chinese Medicine—Gardenia was led by Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Shanghai Institute of International Standardization of TCM, jointly formulated by a research team including the Zhangshu City Inspection and Testing Center and three other units. Dr. Shi Yanhong from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was the project proposer, formally approved in June 2021, and with strong support from the Jiangxi Institute of Quality and Standardization, it took 3 years and was successfully released in May 2024. The formal implementation of this international standard will fully leverage international standards to upgrade the Gardenia industry chain, broaden the international trade paths for Zhangshu's Gardenia medicinal industry, promote the implementation of Zhangshu's strategic plan to create an “internationally renowned medicine capital”, and advance Jiangxi Province's international trade in Chinese medicines and the high-quality development of the TCM industry.
The Gardenia international standard is the first international standard for Chinese medicinal materials that the Jiangxi Institute of Quality and Standardization has participated in. Next, under the guidance of the Jiangxi Provincial Market Supervision Administration, the institute will focus on areas such as the development of TCM international standards and the creation of pilot demonstrations for TCM international standards, further actively promoting the upgrade of Jiangxi Province's TCM industry, using international standards as a bridge to boost Jiangxi TCM going abroad and to the world.
