On July 29, the opening ceremony of the 2021 SCO Forum on Traditional Medicine was held at the Conference Service Center of China (Nanchang) TCM Science and Innovation City. Shen Yueyue, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and Chairperson of the GNFCC SCO, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech.

At the opening ceremony, Yu Wenming, Director of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, released the Nanchang Initiative on SCO Traditional Medicine Cooperation. The initiative states that traditional medicine encompasses knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences of different cultures, used in maintaining health and preventing, diagnosing, improving, or treating physical and mental illnesses. Traditional medicine has played an active role in the global fight against COVID-19, making significant contributions to safeguarding people’s health and building a global health community. China is committed to continuously promoting friendly exchanges between government departments and non-governmental institutions, actively conducting broad exchanges and cooperation in traditional medicine education, healthcare, research, and medicinal resources. The Initiative Includes:
1. The inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional medicine have positive practical significance for national healthcare development. Protect traditional medicinal culture and resources, promote better integration of traditional and modern medicine, enhance the role of traditional medicine, and make greater contributions to improving global health governance.
2. Actively promote research on traditional medicine in health maintenance, prevention, diagnosis, improvement, or treatment of physical and mental diseases, use traditional medicine safely and effectively, leverage its unique advantages, and jointly address health challenges such as chronic diseases, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and cross-border public health emergencies.
3. Promote the development of traditional medicine education and practitioner training, increase efforts to promote traditional medicine, strengthen exchanges among traditional medicine providers, facilitate mutual learning, and enhance capability levels.
4. Actively conduct exchanges and cooperation on traditional medicine based on medicinal plants, establish a multi-entity, multi-level, multi-form, and multi-perspective cooperation framework, promote traditional medicine service trade, and drive the development of the traditional medicine industry.
5. The inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional medicine have positively impacted global civilization progress. Willing to further strengthen cooperation in traditional medicine to better serve human health and achieve the vision of health for all.
Strengthen traditional medicine exchanges and cooperation within the SCO framework and continue holding the SCO Forum on Traditional Medicine.
The forum, themed “Inheritance, Innovation, Mutual Learning, and Sharing”, was co-hosted by the Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation Commission of SCO, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the People's Government of the Jiangxi Province.
